New Delhi: Shankar Dayal Sharma was the 9th President of India. He was a Congress leader for a long time but never got into any controversy. He received respect from all the ruling parties and opposition. Even after being a politician, he was known as a scholar. Even after reaching the post of President, he never forgot his birthplace and he always connected himself to his Bhopal. Today is his birth anniversary on August 19. His life and his political journey is an example of a clean political life.

Shankar Dayal Sharma was born on August 19, 1918, in Amon village of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. His father Pandit Khushilal Sharma was a well-known physician and his mother's name was Subhadra Devi. His early education was at the local Digambar Jain School, after which he studied LLB from St. John's College Agra, Allahabad University and Lucknow University. Apart from law, he also holds a master's degree in English literature, Sanskrit and Hindi.

After this, he went to England to pursue higher studies of law, where he studied PhD. For a few days, he also taught at Cambridge University and returned and taught law at Lucknow University. But they weren't just bookworms. Apart from topping studies, he was also a cross country runner and a winning swimmer. After the end of his presidential term in 1997, his health started deteriorating and on 26 December 1999, he suffered a heart attack and had to be admitted to a hospital in Delhi where he died.
