World Environment Day is celebrated all over the world on 5th June. On this day, many events are organized to sensitize people about the damage to the environment caused by pollution. Rising levels of pollution are becoming a threat to the environment as well as humans. This is causing many organisms to disappear. Humans are also falling prey to a variety of serious diseases. State that World Environment Day was started by the United Nations in 1972.
Environment Day began in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. The world's first environment conference was held here on the same day. It was attended by tatkalin PM Indira Gandhi on behalf of India. It was during this conference that the foundation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was also laid. As a result, it was resolved to celebrate World Environment Day every year.
