The demonetisation took place first and then the GST was finalised. As soon as PM Modi announced demonetisation on November 8, 2016, the country became a different environment. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has a big role to play in formulating the demonetisation roadmap, says Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

On the one hand, demonetisation was adding to the woes of the common people, while the opposition was trying to corner the Modi government. In the beginning, people were also having trouble changing notes. As long queues were seen outside the ATM just after PM Modi's announcement.  When the entire opposition, including the Congress, was attacked after demonetisation, Arun Jaitley once again emerged as a problem solver for the Modi government. He responded to the protesters through the press conference as well as the blog. Defending the demonetisation decision, Jaitley said the move was not aimed at confiscating cash but bringing it into a formal economy through banks.
