Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu tried to pacify the apprehension of scrapping Section 371H of the Special Provisions of the Constitution in force in the state. He said, the objective is the development of backward districts of the state. CM Khandu said that the provisions of Section 371 are to "preserve the economic and cultural interest" of some states, including Arunachal.

Khandu said that after the Centre's decision to remove Section 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, the parties and organizations in the North-East are apprehensive that the special status given to their state can also be withdrawn. However, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has made it clear that the government has no such intention. Congratulating PM Modi for the bold decision on Jammu and Kashmir, Khandu said, "The provisions of Section 371 are inclusive in nature, while Section 370 is divisive in many ways. The government has taken the first decision for inclusive growth in Jammu and Kashmir. '

"I want to assure the people of my state that the provisions of Section 371H will continue to be in force and this is what the Centre has given in Parliament in particular," Khandu said in Itanagar. Section 371H empowers the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh to act in law and order in the State with special responsibility.
