New Delhi: A Plea has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking equal status to the National Anthem (Vande Mataram) with the National Anthem (Jana Gana Mana). The petition seeks to grant the national anthem status to Vande Mataram. The petition is likely to be heard in the Delhi High Court on Tuesday. The petition was filed by BJP spokesperson and advocate Ashwini Upadhyay.

The petitioner said that Vande Mataram has not been granted equal status till date. The court should intervene in the matter. In the petition, Upadhyay demanded that Vand Mataram should be played as the national anthem in all schools in the country. There is also a demand for a national policy on this. It may be noted that some religious organisations have already lodged protests over the necessity of the national song. He says that the national song praises the country as a mother, which is not allowed in his monotheistic religion. Therefore, it should not be imposed as a decree.

Earlier in 2017, the apex court had held that article 51A of the Constitution, that is, under the fundamental duty, only the national anthem and the national flag were mentioned, so the national song (Vande Mataram) cannot be made mandatory. The court made the remarks while hearing Ashwini Upadhyay's plea. At the same time, his plea was also rejected.
