Jitender Kumar won the silver medal in the Asian Wrestling Championship on Sunday, 23 February 2020, and confirmed his place in the Indian team for the Olympic qualifiers, which may close the doors of the Tokyo Games for veteran Sushil Kumar. Two-time Olympic medal winner Sushil did not participate in this championship citing injury. On the second day of the men's freestyle event, no gold medal was added to India's account, as Deepak Poonia (86 kg) and Rahul Aware (61 kg) won the bronze medal.

According to reports, Jitender adopted a superb defensive strategy against defending champion Daniyar Casanov of Kazakhstan but lacked the attack which led to a 1-3 defeat to the defending champions. However, his performance was enough to convince the National Federation that he should go to Kyrgyzstan's Kyrgyzstan for the Olympic qualifiers and there was no need for a re-trial for this category.

Let us tell you that this means that two-time Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar (he also plays in 74 kg) will have to wait and see how Jitender performs in Bishkek in which he reached the finals. The wrestler will qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. If Jeetendar reaches the gold medal match there, then it will close the path of Sushil, who has been struggling since the 2018 Asian Games. If Jitender is unable to achieve the Olympic quota in Bishkek, then the final opportunity will be available in April through the World Qualifying Competition.
