Guwahati: A grocery store owner in Koratigram area of Rongpur police station in Assam was arrested along with a customer on Friday for opening a shop during curfew, police officials said on Saturday. Babul Banik, a 50-year-old shopkeeper, had trouble breathing in police custody. He was then taken to Silchar Civil Hospital from where doctors referred him to Silchar Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.
More than 500 people took to the streets in violation of curfew rules after the death of the shopkeeper and demanded action against the policemen and their immediate arrest. They accused the policemen of harassing the shopkeeper in custody. Senior police officials including Cachar Superintendent of Police VC Chandrakant rushed to the spot and assured the protesters that necessary action would be taken after receiving the postmortem report.
On the other hand, the wife of the deceased shopkeeper claimed that she was not suffering from any disease and had not opened the shop during the curfew but had gone to bring sugar for the family. Police said the situation in the area is tense but under control.
