Guwahati: Assam cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday jumped into the ongoing debate on CAA and NRC and said he does not want the votes of those who openly challenge Indian and Assamese culture. Speaking to presspersons, Sarma said that a section of the immigrant Muslim population in the northeastern state is communal and serves to spoil the local culture and language.

He further said, "The Muslim population of Assam is divided into two streams, one which has come from Bangladesh to Assam and the other which is indigenous. Some people who came to Assam at different times started to identify themselves as Mia and they are very communal." Sarma further said, "They want to spoil Assamese culture and language These people are involved in many activities. Therefore, I do not want to become an MLA with their votes. My personal opinion is that those who openly challenge the Assamese culture, language, and overall Indian culture should not vote for us.''

Sarma also commented on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC), as the Central Government told in Lok Sabha on Tuesday that rules are being framed under the CAA. Sarma said that the Center has to decide on the rules for the implementation of CAA.
