Guwahati: Only Assam citizens will be allowed to appear for the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) and Assam Civil Service examinations, the state's BJP government announced on Wednesday (ACS). The Assam cabinet made the decision at a meeting led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

After the cabinet meeting, Sarma spoke to the media and said that while knowing Assamese was previously required for candidates to sit in the APSC and ACS exams, it appears that this has caused some misunderstanding among Assamese students who studied in the English medium. As a result, he stated, the state government has decided to remove the language paper from the APSC and ACS examinations.

"Though the language paper has been withdrawn from the APSC and ACS examinations, candidates must be able to speak Assamese or any other recognised state language, including Bodo language," the Chief Minister stated. He said that a Youth Commission would be established to give adolescents with training in order for them to pursue further education and job prospects.
