Dhaka: Amid ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has raised concerns about the declining Hindu population in both Assam and Bangladesh, warning that similar demographic shifts could occur in West Bengal and Jharkhand. Citing official census data up to 2011, Sarma highlighted a significant decline in the Hindu population in these regions.
"The official census data up to 2011 from both Assam and Bangladesh indicate a clear demographic shift. The situation in West Bengal and Jharkhand is likely to follow the same trend," CM Sarma stated. According to the census report, the Hindu population in Assam decreased by 9.23% between 1951 and 2011, while in Bangladesh, it dropped by 13.5% over the same period. In a related development, The Daily Star reported an incident in Bangladesh where a group of local Madrasa students removed the nameplate of the "Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Expressway," commonly known as the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway in Munshiganj. The students replaced it with a banner reading "Father of the Nation Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) Expressway."
Bangladesh is currently experiencing significant political turmoil, with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina tendering her resignation on August 5 following widespread protests. The demonstrations, initially led by students demanding an end to the quota system for government jobs, quickly escalated into broader anti-government protests. In the wake of Hasina's resignation, Nobel laureate economist Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as the head of Bangladesh's interim government on August 8. Yunus, 84, took the oath of office in a ceremony in Dhaka, with Bangladesh's President Mohammed Shahabuddin administering the oath for his role as chief advisor, which is equivalent to the position of Prime Minister. Seventeen other members of the interim government also took their oaths at the ceremony.
