Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister and Firebrand BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that now Imams and others coming from outside in madrasas in the state will have to register themselves first. Two terrorists have been arrested in Assam recently, who was working for the terrorist organization Al Qaeda as imams of two different mosques. That is why, taking a lesson from this, the BJP government in the state has decided to set a 'Standard Operating Procedure' for madrasas.

CM Sarma informed on Monday (August 22, 2022) that a portal will be created for this, on which Imams and others coming from outside in madrasas will have to register themselves. He has also informed that assistance is being taken from Muslim citizens of the state to implement it. However, those who are already citizens of Assam do not need to register their names under this SoP. This is for people from outside the state. Along with this, CM Sarma has also told the villagers that if an Imam comes to the area, whom they do not know, then the villagers will have to immediately inform the nearest police station. The police will then confirm the unidentified Imam, and only then will he be allowed to stay there.

A few months ago, 800 madrasas in Assam were converted into regular schools. In April, 16 terrorists were arrested while busting a gang of the terrorist organization Al Qaeda in Assam. At the same time, 12 terrorists were caught after the disclosure of a terror module in July. There are reports of terrorist activities in mosques and madrasas of Assam. Eight clerics involved in terror activity at a madrasa in Morigaon were arrested. Recently, two Imams were arrested who were recruiting Muslim youth for al Qaeda by staying in the mosque and working as terrorist sleeper cells.
