The Assam Government has launched a pilot project at the Jia Bharali river in Jamuguri to tackle the state's flood and erosion problems, and dredging and excavation work is now underway at the project site.

In the presence of Sootea Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Padma Hazarika and Member of Parliament (MP) Pallab Lochan Das, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched this project. The Chief Minister stated that around 2 km will be dredged during the first phase of the project, which will thereafter be expanded to 20 km.

He further stated that the subsequent phase will be carried out in a systematic manner in other Assam tributaries. The dredger was bought from the United States and transported by sea to its final destination, the Mumbai Port. The dredger was subsequently transported by land to Assam. The CM declared that the scourge of erosion will eventually be eradicated.

It is worth mentioning that this specific location has a long history of erosion. Thousands of hectares of agricultural land have already been drowned in the Jamugiri river as a result of erosion from adjacent Arunachal Pradesh. The Jia Bharali River, also known as the Kameng River, is a tributary of the Brahmaputra River. Its source is in the highlands of Arunachal Pradesh, and it flows through the centre of Tezpur before joining the Brahmaputra. The Assam Chief Minister has pledged to enhance the state's infrastructure, and the govt has launched many large-scale development projects of this nature.
