Guwahati: Following the announcement of an alliance between Congress and the National Conference ahead of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has sharply criticized the National Conference's manifesto. Sarma described it as an "anti-India and pro-Pakistani document."
At a press conference, Sarma claimed the manifesto advocates for a constructive dialogue with Pakistan, the restoration of Article 370 and Article 35A, and the resumption of government service for those involved in violent activities. He also alleged that the manifesto proposes discontinuing reservations for Dalits, Gujars, Bakarwals, and Pahari communities, while continuing to support separatist elements.
Sarma accused Congress of endorsing the National Conference’s agenda by forming an alliance, asserting that this alliance undermines national interests and disrespects the sacrifices of the armed forces. He condemned Congress for allegedly being opposed to India's interests and called the party’s stance exposed.
In response to the alliance, the National Conference's election manifesto includes promises to restore Articles 370 and 35A, initiate diplomatic efforts with Pakistan, and ensure the dignified return of Kashmiri Pandits. The manifesto also emphasizes conflict resolution, confidence-building measures, and full connectivity across the Line of Control (LoC) for trade and social exchange.
The assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir will occur in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, with vote counting scheduled for October 4. These elections will be the first in Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370.
