The Assam assembly elections have been held in three phases and results are due today. In Assam, the term of the Assembly is scheduled to end on May 31 but the process of forming a new government is to be completed before that. Now, the results coming out today are going to be clear as to which party will form the government in Assam. Assam has 126 assembly seats. The credibility of veterans like Sarbananda Sonowal, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Ripun Bora is at stake today. Raijor party chief Akhil Gogoi is leading by more than 3,000 votes in Sivasagar.

Now Gogoi's lead is certainly going to strengthen the morale of the party. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has now taken the lead after initially trailing during the postal ballot count. Sonowal is in the fray from Majuli and is also the sitting MLA from the seat. With this, the Majuli assembly is the highest-profile seat in the state as BJP leader, and sitting Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonawal has entered the fray from here. The Congress has fielded Rajib Lochan Pegu against him.

If you remember, Sarbananda Sonowal was elected MLA from this seat in 2016 and is once again trying his luck in the electoral battle from here. Sonowal had lagged behind in the early trends of ballot paper as per the information received, though he has taken the lead in the latest trends.
