Guwahati: Amidst the Assam government's decision to close madrasas operating at a cost-effective expenditure, state Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that only government madrasas will be converted into schools, there is no plan to close private madrasas. He has also made it clear that the equality of madrasa education and general education will be abolished.

The Assam minister has said, "We will dissolve the Madarsa board. We will withdraw the notification which gives madrasa education equal status to general education. We will convert all government madrasas in the state into general schools". However, the minister also made it clear that private madrasas in the state will not be closed.  "We are bringing regulation. The students will be clearly told why they are in the madrasa, they have to include science and mathematics in their syllabus".

Sarma further said that they would have to register themselves with the state. The Assam government has announced the closure of Madarsas in the state at government expense in November. The government argues why religious education should be provided at government expenses. However, the government also wants to close 100 Sanskrit schools.
