Guwahati: Since the occurrence of bird flu across the country, many states have banned the import of chicken for some time. Meanwhile, the Assam government has also temporarily banned the import of poultry due to the festival of Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu. The state government on Friday issued a notification in this regard, stating that as a precaution, a temporary ban has been imposed on the entry of chicken in the western border of the state in the interest of preventing the disease.

The state government further said that instructions have already been issued to the concerned authorities for active and targeted surveillance against the disease. The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department is also keeping an eye on the sales happening in the local markets and has also discussed with the state forest department to increase vigilance. According to the state government, Assam annually imports more than 400 crore poultry products from outside the state.

On the other hand, to encourage the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi and his movement for Khadi and pay tribute to him, the Government of Assam has decided to present Khadi clothes to Grade IV employees of the State Government. As part of the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi, Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal has directed the Department of Handloom and Clothing to give Khadi shirts, Eri shawls and Eri stoles to Grade IV male and female employees of the state government. The first phase will be started from this month.
