Guwahati: The removal of illegal occupants in the Lumding Reserve Forest in the Hozai district of Assam has been completed peacefully. In this regard, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sharma said that all the people living here have been sent back home and now the forest has been completely free from encroachments. The state government had deployed 1,000 police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel in the drive to remove encroachments.

CM Sarma said that there was no untoward incident during the removal of encroachments and the operation was completed peacefully. Hozai Deputy Commissioner Anupam Chaudhary said that the eviction drive was completed peacefully on Monday as people were there informed about the Guwahati High Court order. Most of the people had left in the past few days after counselling conducted by the district administration. It may be recalled that out of 22,403 hectares of land in Lumding forest area, 1,410 hectares of land was illegally occupied by many people. The Guwahati High Court had directed the state government to remove the encroachment. According to Gounadeep Das, divisional forest officer of Hozai, 3,000 people from 670 families were living on 1,410 hectares of land. They were doing agriculture and business here.

About a month and a half ago, on September 23, a drive was also launched against encroachments in the Gorukhuti area of Darang district. There was violence during this operation. The police who had gone to remove the encroachment slipped into the attack by the villagers. Two people were killed and more than 20 injured in the attack. A 12-year-old teenager was also among the dead.
