Assam: Lack of COVID testing cannot delay emergency medical procedures

On Wednesday, the Assam Health Department revised its COVID-19 patient care recommendations, noting that no emergency operation (including surgeries and births) should be delayed due to a lack of a COVID-19 test.

According to the revised rules, any patient who presents to a casualty or emergency facility in a medical college, district hospital, or other government or private health institution should not be required to wait for COVID test results unless the patient is experiencing COVID-related symptoms.

Asymptomatic patients undergoing surgical or non-surgical invasive procedures, such as pregnant women in/near labour who are hospitalised for delivery, should not be checked till symptoms occur, according to the guidelines. Patients should not be directed to other institutions for lack of a testing facility and all preparations should be made to collect and transfer samples to the testing facilities.
