In Assam, mother-son arrested for selling kidneys, 20 people sold kidneys

Guwahati: A mother and son and their accomplice involved in an illegal kidney trade racket have been arrested in Morigaon, Assam. The accused used to lure poor villagers to pay Rs 4-5 lakh for donating kidneys. The arrested woman and her accomplices were doing illegal kidney business in South Dharmatul village of Morigaon district of central Assam. They promised Rs 4-5 lakh to the poor villagers.

The racket was revealed after some locals in the village nabbed the woman and her son while visiting the village on Saturday in search of kidney sellers. The villagers later handed them over to the police. At least 20 people in the village are said to have sold their kidneys each. The arrested woman agent has been identified as Guwahati resident Lilimai Bodo. Police have arrested Bodo, his son, and his accomplice Ramen Medhi. Morigaon District Superintendent of Police (SP) Aparna Natarajan said, "A case (432/21) has been registered under sections of human trafficking at Jagirod police station.'' The woman is currently in police custody. Our investigation is continuing. We are attempting to locate local agents of the racket.

The people of South Dharamtul village are mostly farmers and daily wage laborers. Most of them fall below the poverty line. K Das, a local resident of South Dharamtul village, said he sold a kidney to repay the loan amount. He said, 'I sold a kidney just for my family and to repay the loan amount. The agent promised me Rs 4 lakh, but I got Rs 3.6 lakh.'
