Guwahati: The final list of national citizens register (NRC) will be released today in the northeastern state of Assam. The final list of NRC identifying Indians and outsiders in the state will be released at 10 a.m. Once the final list comes, it will decide the future of about 40 Laksh. In view of the seriousness of the matter, strict security arrangements have been made throughout Assam.

In Assam, section 144 has been imposed in several sensitive areas of the state including Guwahati. Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal says that no one needs to come to Dashahat and we want to assure you on behalf of the Assam government that all will be taken care of. In fact, 3.29 crore people in Assam had applied for inclusion in the NRC, but only 2.90 lakh of them were included in the draft list released last year, as the remaining 40 lakh did not give any document proving their citizenship.

On the other hand, the Central Government assured the people of Assam that those whose names are not on the list will not be detained and will be given full opportunity to prove their citizenship. Those who are not on the list will be able to appeal to the Foreigners Tribunal. The government has also extended the time period for filing appeals from 60 to 120 days.
