Big blow to 'terror' in Assam, 12 jihadists arrested

GUWAHATI: A terror module of Pakistan-backed terror outfit Al Qaeda has been busted in Assam. Police on Thursday arrested 12 jihadists from two districts for their links to Bangladesh-based terror outfit Ansarul Islam. Not only this, but the police have also sealed two madrasas. Along with this, the police have also arrested Mufti of the madrasa at Moirabari in Morigaon on charges of jihadi links. Police have also detained and interrogated a total of eight teachers, including the headmaster.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that two terror modules have been detected in the state. Of the 12 suspected jihadists who have been arrested, 10 have been nabbed from different areas of Jania in Barpeta. While one has been arrested from Guwahati. Morigaon district police have informed that a man who was running a private madrasa in Soruchala village has been arrested. Action has been taken against him under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The arrested person has been identified as Mufti Mustafa. Mufti Mustafa is accused of indulging in various economic transactions and anti-national activities related to Ansarul Islam. Let us know that Ansarul Islam is a radical organization related to al-Qaeda.  

The police have also detained seven others. They are all teachers of another madrasa located in the village itself. All of them are accused of being related to Ansarul Islam. Since 2019, Mustafa had carried out several economic transactions with Ansarul Islam activists Amiruddin Ansari and Mamoon Rashid. Both were arrested from Kolkata and Barpeta a few months ago. Police have also frozen Mustafa's bank account. Police claim that Mustafa was operating the terror module from the house. During the investigation, it has been revealed that a 'wanted criminal' from abroad was also sheltered in the madrasa, who managed to escape.
