Gang rape accused shot dead by Assam Police, trying to escape

GUWAHATI: A man arrested for allegedly gang-raping a girl was shot dead in Assam's Kokrajhar district on Thursday for trying to escape from police custody in which he was seriously injured. Additional SP, SS Panesar said the accused, along with two men, had gang-raped the girl on Monday night.  

He was taken to the spot where he hid the mobile. As soon as the police took him to Dholmara near Ranipur tea garden, suddenly he turned around and snatched the service pistol of a police officer and tried to open fire at the police team. According to the agency, the police official said that another police officer fired immediately at the accused to control the situation and the bullet hit the right leg of the accused. The ASP said that the accused has been admitted to Kokrajhar Civil Hospital for treatment.  

The 16-year-old victim's father had lodged an FIR at Kokrajhar police station alleging that his daughter was raped by three youths in Dholambara village on Monday night. The police initially arrested two persons and the next day the third accused was also arrested and cases were registered against them under various sections of the IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
