Assam Rifles recovers betel nut worth Rs 1.56 crore from smugglers

Champhai: Kshetra Khuangpha, Champhai District Headquarters 23 Sector Aizawl Battalion of Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) recovered 40,000 kg (estimated) areca nut worth Rs 1.56 crore. Based on specific inputs, the operation was carried out by a joint team of Assam Rifles and Customs Department, Champhai.

The estimated value of the recovered arecanut is Rs 1.56 crore. A press release said that the Customs Department Champhai, District Champhai confiscated the prohibited items for further legal proceedings. The ongoing smuggling of arecanut is a major cause of concern for the state of Mizoram, especially along the Indo-Myanmar border. The Assam Rifles, popularly known as the 'Prahari of the Northeast', continues its efforts against smuggling activities in Mizoram.
