Assam: On September 20, 1942, Assam saw tears and blood when many bravehearts laid down their lives for the country during the Quit India Movement. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday paid tributes to freedom fighters of Assam including Kanaklata Barua, Tilleswari Barua and others. The Chief Minister took to social media to remember the sacrifices made by the great leaders for the country's independence. Taking to Twitter, he wrote, "Salute to those saints who sacrificed their lives for freedom."

Kanaklata Barua (22 December 1924 – 20 September 1942), also known as Birbala and Shaheed, was an Indian independence activist and AISF leader. Who was shot by the British police. Barua was born as the daughter of Krishna Kanta and Karneshwari Barua in Borangbari village in the undivided Darrang district of Assam. During the Quit India Movement, Barua joined the Mrutyu Vahini, a group of youths from the Gohpur sub-division of Assam. On 20 September 1942, Bahini decided that she would unfurl the national flag at the local police station. The police warned of dire consequences. And shot Barua. Barua was only 17 years old at the time of martyrdom.
