Guwahati: On the completion of 200 years of Assam tea, the CM Himanta Biswa Sarma of the state has made a big announcement for the farmers on Friday (June 9). The Assam government has announced tax exemption on agricultural income for a period of three years from April 1. The decision was taken during the state cabinet meeting held at Janata Bhawan in Guwahati. According to this, farmers will no longer have to pay tax on agricultural income for the next three years.

Announcing the cabinet decisions led by CM Sarma, Assam Tourism Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah said that the state cabinet has approved the issuance of a notification under the Assam Agricultural Income Tax Act, 1939 to give tax exemption on agricultural income for a period of 3 years from April 1 this year. He said the decision was taken to commemorate 200 years of the Assam tea industry. Tourism Minister Jayanta Barua also said that the state cabinet has approved the Assam Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Ordinance, 2023, to be promulgated, as per the recommendations of the GST Council. 

Barua further said that the Olympic Values Education Program will be implemented in 250 government and private schools of Guwahati in collaboration with the Abhinav Bindra Foundation Trust. It will cost around Rs 6 crore. In this regard, the state cabinet has given the green signal to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Olympic Committee and the Abhinav Bindra Foundation. He said the programme will address the challenges faced by lifestyle, lack of concentration and school dropouts.
