In the first-ever eastern swamp deer census, the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve counted 868 swamp deer. There are 173 males, 557 females, and 138 yearlings in the park's overall deer population. The prior census process was only recorded in Kaziranga National Park.

The recent census revealed that the swamp deer population has decreased, with a total of 907 in 2018. Floods in 2019 and 2020, according to park authorities, may have contributed to the population decline. Seven hundred and eighty-six swam deer were counted in the Eastern Assam Division, 62 in the Biswanath Wildlife Division, and 20 in the Nagaon Wildlife Division.

The process employed at least 29 enumerators and 112 forest personnel.
