Guwahati: An interactive session was held in Guwahati on 7 August where the Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Ashok Singhal proposed the use of LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) to map the topography of the state.Minister Ashok Singhal said, “Through this we can make planning, irrigation, flood control, forest and revenue planning. All these tasks can be accomplished with technology instead of relying on manual surveys.

Assam will become one of the first states to take such an initiative using laser technology. LIDAR is capable of seeing through forest cover and producing accurate, three-dimensional maps and is used by private and government agencies around the world for its topography mapping capabilities. Earlier in the news, Ashok Singhal had shared that discussions are going on to enhance the beauty of Guwahati's flyover. Singhal said that the parapets and pillars of the flyover would be painted with colorful graffiti. The Assam minister said that, "At present there are about eight to ten flyovers in the city, some of which are under construction, each to be chosen with a theme,"

LIDAR refers to a remote sensing technology that emits intense, focused beams of light and measures the time it takes for the reflections to be detected by the sensor. This information is used to compute ranges, or distances, to objects. The three-dimensional coordinates of the target objects are computed from. In this way, people can figure out how the area looks like.
