With the loan controversy continuing in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, said on Wednesday that he will accept a Rs 14 thousand crore loan for the current fiscal year.
He went on to say that the debates were pointless because the Assembly had permitted the state government to take out debts totalling 3.5 percent of the state's GDP. "As per the clearances, we will take another Rs 14 thousand crore loan this year and Rs 22 thousand crore loans the next year," he added.
He went on to say that there would be no issues because the loans were obtained for development and were based on the state's GDP. He went on to say that because the state's GDP is likely to reach Rs 4.1 lakh crore shortly, the state may use these loans for any project.
He argued that because there are no protests in other states when they accept loans, "why" is it an issue in Assam. He also stated that loans are obtained for capital projects in order to improve the state's infrastructure and facilities.
