The much-anticipated Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital in North Lakhimpur was officially opened on Tuesday with the start of MBBS sessions at Chaboti-Chawukham, North Lakhimpur.

In the presence of Assam health minister Kesab Mahanta, Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah, local MLA Manab Deka, and Dhakuwakhona MLA Naba Kumar Doley, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated and dedicated the medical college to the state. Chief Minister Sarma declared during the opening of the medical college that similar institutions would be built in each of Assam's district headquarters.

"In Assam, there are 24,000 villages that require two physicians, totaling 48,000 thousand doctors." In the next 15 to 20 years, medical institutions in 24 districts throughout the state would produce the required number of doctors," stated CM Sarma.

He also stated that the LMCH will be offering PG Courses in the near future. The North Lakhimpur Cancer Hospital will open shortly, according to the Chief Minister, and North Lakhimpur will have a university by 2025. He also requested that North Lakhimpur's state health minister, Kesab Mahanta, establish a BSc nursing college and a dental college.

The Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital, which is affiliated to Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences and built at a cost of Rs 500 crores and spread across 168 bighas of land, is Assam's eighth medical college. It includes 514 beds, 80 ICU beds, seven operating theatres, and MRI and CT scan equipment, as well as 122 interns and 66 resident doctors. At the inaugural ceremony, Dr. Anup Kumar Das, the Principal of LMCH, administered the oath to newly enrolled students. Earlier, the Chief Minister dedicated the Lakhimpur College of Veterinary Science's administration building in Zoihing.
