New Delhi: The date for assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur will be announced today. The Election Commission (EC) is scheduled to hold a press conference in this regard at 3.30 p.m. today. According to sources, polling is expected in 6 to 7 phases in Uttar Pradesh. Amidst the increasing number of cases of new corona Omicron variants, the EC has held several rounds of talks with health officials as well as the status of corona in all electoral states.

It is expected that some new rules may also be announced. State assembly elections are proposed in Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand within the next few months. Assembly is also proposed in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat later this year. The upcoming elections are not only important for the ruling BJP in UP and the Congress in Punjab, but also for the Samajwadi Party, which is pushing for its lost ground in UP, and the Aam Aadmi Party, which is trying to get out of Delhi, along with the TMC stepping in for the first time in Goa.

Tell us that UP, the country's most populous state, has 80 Lok Sabha and 403 Assembly seats. Not only that, the party that formed the government in this state is almost certain to come to the centre. The Goa Assembly elections are mainly being held between the BJP-Congress and the AAP-TMC. In Uttarakhand, the present BJP government faces several challenges after changing two consecutive CMs while the Congress and BJP are clashing in Manipur.
