Itanagar: The counting of votes for the assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim has concluded, and the results are now clear. In Arunachal Pradesh, which has 60 assembly seats, the BJP secured a majority by winning 46 seats. The National People's Party (NPEP) won 5 seats, while the Congress managed to win only one seat. In the 32-seat Sikkim Assembly, the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) fell just one seat short of a clean sweep, with the main opposition party winning only one seat. Notably, former football team captain Baichung Bhutia and the former Chief Minister of Sikkim both lost their elections.
With the results in, the Chief Ministers of both states are expected to meet with the Governor soon. Celebrations are underway for the victorious parties in both Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. Voting took place in both states on April 19, with Sikkim recording a voter turnout of 79.88 percent and Arunachal Pradesh seeing 82.95 percent voter participation.
In Sikkim, the electoral battle was primarily between the ruling Prem Singh Tamang-led SKM and Pawan Kumar Chamling's Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), with additional candidates from the BJP and Congress. Key candidates included Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, his wife Krishna Kumari Rai, former Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling, former Indian footballer Baichung Bhutia, and BJP's Narendra Kumar Subba. Baichung Bhutia lost the election. In the 2019 elections, the SKM won 17 seats while the SDF secured 15 seats.
In Arunachal Pradesh, the contest was mainly between the ruling BJP and the Congress. The BJP fielded candidates in all 60 seats, while the Congress contested 19 seats. The National People's Party (NPP) and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) also participated in the elections by fielding candidates in the state.
