Amritsar: A case of the brutal lynching of a journalist in Punjab's Zirakpur has come to light. His name is Alok Verma and he is a senior journalist of the Hindi daily newspaper Amar Ujala. On the night of Tuesday (May 3, 2022), unidentified assailants fatally attacked the journalist. According to Amar Ujala's report, Alok Verma was on his way back home after finishing his duty, in the meantime, two bike-borne unidentified assailants attacked him with a baseball bat and an iron rod on his head.

After this, the miscreants fled from the spot with his purse and mobile. The journalist suffered serious head injuries in the attack. According to reports, doctors have had to put 27 stitches on the head of the injured journalist. When the miscreants attacked him, Alok Verma fell to the ground there. He kept pleading for his rescue, but the accused kept beating him brutally. Hearing their pleas, no one came to the rescue. The assailants fled leaving Alok Verma lying on the ground in a dilapidated condition. Later, in some way, in an injured state, he reached his home, from where he was immediately admitted to the hospital. Dr Sudhir Garg, medical superintendent of GMCH, said Alok Verma was brought to the emergency ward at 3.45 am. He had severe head injuries, which caused a lot of bleeding. However, the good thing was that he had no internal injury, due to which he was discharged from the hospital at 2.30 pm.
Condemning the attack on the senior journalist following the incident, the Chandigarh Press Club has demanded the Punjab Police to register a criminal case against the assailants and arrest the accused immediately. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh also condemned the attack on the Amar Ujala journalist and attacked the AAP government in Punjab led by Bhagwant Mann. The captain alleged that there was chaos on the streets of Punjab. He tweeted, "The murderous attack on Alok Verma, a journalist from @AmarUjalaNews in Zirakpur, is highly condemnable.
