Australian PM India 4-day India visit begins today; what's in Focus

NEW DELHI: The first official visit of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will begin in India today on Wednesday, 8 March 2023. Albanese is in India for India-Australia Summit which will be concluded on 11 March.

PM Albanese is making his first official trip to India since the Labour Party took office in May 2022. The goal of the trip to India is to enhance ties between Australia and India.

Schedule for Australian Prime Minister Albanese's visit to India

At 4:10 PM, Australian Prime Minister Albanese will take off and land at Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. After that, he'll go to the Sabarmati Ashram. He will go to the Raj Bhavan at 5:20 to take part in the Holi celebration.

The Australian prime minister will go to Mumbai on March 9 (a Thursday).

He will attend the ceremonial reception on March 10 at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, which will be followed by the laying of wreaths at the Rajghat. Albanese will meet with S. Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, on the same day.

Also, he will have meetings with President Droupadi Murmu in the Rashtrapati Bhawan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Hyderabad House in New Delhi.

Tomorrow at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera, PM Modi and his Australian counterpart will also watch the first day of the fourth Test match between Australia and India in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Tournament (9 March).

Australia-India relations: India is poised to announce large investments in Australia's rare earth industry during the PM of Australia's visit. The Australian and Indian governments, as well as the business community, have praised KABIL (Khanij Bidesh India Limited) for its plans to invest a sizable amount in Australia's rare earth industry.

India and Australia have launched a number of efforts in the area of clean energy cooperation. A Memorandum of Intent (LoI) on New and Renewable Energy that India and Australia signed in February 2022 calls for cooperation to lower the cost of renewable energy (RE) technologies, particularly ultralow-cost solar and clean hydrogen.

Australia is in favour of India being a member of a larger UN Security Council. India and Australia have both taken part in the East Asia Summits and are members of the Commonwealth, IORA, ASEAN Regional Forum, International Solar Alliance, Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, and Indo-Pacific Economic Framework.

One of the top countries from which talented immigrants come to Australia is India. The size and significance of the Indian community in Australia is expanding. According to the 2021 Census, around 9,76,000 Australians can trace their lineage to an Indian origin, making them the second-largest group of inhabitants who were born abroad.
