New Delhi: Australia had recently banned travel from India amid the second wave of the corona epidemic in India. Now PM Scott Morrison has decided to reverse that decision. PM Morrison said on Friday that Australia will lift the ban on travel of its citizens coming from India in the next week.
Australia had temporarily banned passengers coming from India to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection. The verdict said that even If Australian citizens violate it, they could face a five-year jail term and a hefty fine of 66,000 Australian dollars. The temporary ban came into effect last Monday. At present, it will be applicable to passengers who are willing to visit Australia and who have visited India in the last 14 days. According to the Herald newspaper, published from Sydney, it is estimated that there are currently about nine thousand Australians in India and 600 of them have been classified as unsafe.
The decision was announced by the health ministry after a meeting of the Australian Cabinet. Health Minister Greg Hunt had said that the decision is based on the ratio of passengers infected in India and from abroad to passengers from abroad who have come to Australia and placed in quarantine. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) quoted him as saying that the move was due to the "number of unmanageable infected" passengers coming from India.
