Automakers produced 2.08 million vehicles in June, rising 22.6 percent year over year, according to figures released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. This represents an early indication that supply issues for semiconductors are improving.

The numbers, however, exclude the output of medium, intermediate and heavy commercial vehicles. Total passenger vehicle output rose 9.5 percent on year to 324,011 units in June. Within this, the production of sport and multi utility vehicles rose by nearly a third on year to 154,492 units. Production of passenger cars fell 5.2percent on year to 159,121 units. Passenger cars comprise segments such as entry level cars, compact cars, hatchbacks and sedans.

The trend in the segment is in line with the wider market shift towards sport utility vehicles. In the two-wheeler segment, the output rose 25.6percent to 1.7 mln units. The growth in the segment was led by scooters, which account for about 30 percent of the two-wheeler market. Companies based in India also exported 486,208 vehicles in June, about 9 percent more on year. In June, among passenger vehicle makers, output of all major companies grew except Maruti Suzuki India Ltd which was faced with a plant shutdown of six days in the month.

Also, the output of Nissan Motor India Pvt Ltd fell nearly 10percent on year while that of Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd nearly halved on year in June. In the two-wheeler space, output grew for all major players except Bajaj Auto. Bajaj Auto's output, beset by supply issues, was flat on year in June. Bajaj Auto's output in the three-wheeler segment was also slightly down at 31,498 units in June.
