NEW DELHI: In response to the recent chaos at airports, Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has introduced new measures to address the issues caused by fog-related flight delays, especially at Delhi airport. The disruptions have led to significant problems in both airport and aircraft operations.

In a recent announcement, Minister Scindia outlined additional Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to alleviate passenger inconvenience during fog-induced disruptions. These SOPs have been communicated to all airlines operating in the affected areas.

Here are the key points of the new measures:

Daily Incidence Reporting: Airlines are now required to submit incidence reports three times a day for all six metro airports.

Monitoring of Directives: Strict monitoring and reporting of the implementation of Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) Directives, SOPs, and CARs (Civil Aviation Requirements) will be carried out regularly.

Introduction of 'War Rooms': Airports and airline operators at the six Metro Airports will establish 'War Rooms' to promptly address any issues related to passenger inconvenience.

Continuous CISF Manpower: Adequate manpower from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will be ensured round-the-clock.

Operational Updates: Runway 29L at Delhi Airport has been made CAT III operational, and the re-carpeting of RWY 10/28 at Delhi Airport will also be undertaken for CAT III operationalization.

Minister Scindia emphasized that all stakeholders are working tirelessly to minimize the impact of fog-related disruptions. He strongly condemned unruly behavior, stating that it would be dealt with firmly under existing legal provisions.

In light of a recent incident involving a passenger assaulting a pilot on an IndiGo aircraft at Delhi airport, Minister Scindia stressed the unacceptable nature of such behavior.

The DGCA is set to issue SOPs for airlines to improve communication and facilitate passengers during flight cancellations and delays caused by adverse weather conditions. These SOPs mandate airlines to provide real-time information on delays through their websites, along with advance notifications through SMS, WhatsApp, and email.

The SOPs also stress the importance of updated information displays at airports and appropriate training for airline staff to communicate effectively with passengers regarding flight delays. In consideration of the fog season and adverse weather, airlines are encouraged to proactively cancel flights anticipated to be delayed for more than three hours to prevent airport congestion and minimize passenger inconvenience.
