New Delhi: On Monday, the Central government amended its clinical guidelines on corona treatment. Above all, in these new guidelines, the government has asked doctors to avoid the use of steroids in the treatment of corona patients. The government's decision comes just a few days ago when Task Force chief VK Paul expressed concern over the overdose of steroids drugs in the second wave of the corona. State that the revised guidelines have been issued by All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)-Corona National Task Force and Joint Monitoring Group (DGHS) under the Union Ministry of Health.

The revised guidelines state that drugs with steroids increase the risk of secondary infections such as mucormycosis or black fungus if used before, in more doses, or for longer than required. The new guideline recommends doses of different medicines for mild, moderate and severe symptoms of the corona. On the other hand, it has been reported that if someone has not been recovering from coughing for two to three weeks, he should undergo a test for TB or any other such disease.

What are the guidelines for different types of symptoms:-

- If the upper respiratory tract develops symptoms of corona and the patient does not have breathing problems or hypoxia, it is kept in mild symptoms and is advised to be treated in home isolation itself. Patients with mild symptoms are advised to go to doctors if they have breathing problems, or high fever or a sharp cough for five days.

- On the other hand, if a patient is flexing between 90 and 93 per cent of oxygen saturating and having difficulty breathing, he should be admitted to the hospital. These are moderate symptoms and such patients should be given oxygen support.

- If the respiratory rate in a patient is above 30 per minute, difficulty breathing and oxygen saturation are 90 per cent below room temperature, it will be kept in severe symptoms and the patient should be admitted to ICU as they will need respiratory support. Those who need more oxygen and are breathing slowly will be fitted with Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) - helmet and face mask interface as per requirement.

- The revised guideline approves the use of emergency or off-label Remdesivir in case patients have minor to severe symptoms. It can only be used for patients who have not complained of 'renal' or 'hepatic dysfunction' within 10 days of having any symptoms.

- It has been advised that patients who are not taking oxygen artificially or are at home should not be using this medicine on them.
