Your follow the CTM routine like a religion, take your makeup off every night without fail, get a good night’s sleep and exercise. Yet, your skin is far from glowing. You might want to try altering your food choices to see changes in your skin’s appearance. No matter what you apply on your skin, what you consume and feed your skin also plays an important role in your skin’s health. Seemingly harmless foods might be having an adverse effect on your skin. Here are a few foods that may be contributing to problematic skin.

Dairy As surprising as this may sound, dairy products like milk, cheese, butter and yoghurt may not be doing your skin any good. Dairy products are known to contain certain hormonal elements that stimulate oil production. The more oil your body produces, the more likely it may lead to clogged pores, which in turn can cause breakouts. Beware of skimmed milk, as they are more likely to cause acne than the regular forms of milk. If you are not interested in cutting out all dairy from your diet (who can give up cheese?), try substituting regular milk with soy or almond milk. Butter is known to cause an increase in the appearance of wrinkles, so keep your butter intake minimal.

Sugar We all have been in love with sugar at some point in our lives. As we know, it is bad for our waistlines, but turns out it is pretty bad for our skin too. It is a double threat, as sugar causes insulin levels to spike in our body which causes increased oil production. This in turn causes breakouts. Sugar also breaks down the collagen and elastin in our skin, making it lose its elasticity and suppleness. This causes skin to sag and increases the appearance of wrinkles. If you do crave that hit of sugar, try a fruit instead. They are full of natural sugars and have the added benefit of antioxidants that help fight signs of ageing.

Salt  Salt causes your body to retain moisture which in turn causes puffy, inflamed skin. This may not be obvious in all parts of your body, but areas where the skin is thin, like around your eyes can appear puffy when the salt intake is high. Another side effect is that excessive salt consumption causes your body to dehydrate. This automatically makes your skin dry, irritable and patchy. Increased salt intake causes collagen levels in your body to reduce and this also causes skin to age faster. Salt is necessary and is a vital nutrient, but anything in excess is always bad. So beware of foods that are high in salt, and try and adopt a low-sodium diet.
