Taking consideration of the use of the word ‘Dalit’ for new Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi by the media, the Scheduled Caste Commission of Punjab has ordered against using the word for the members of the Scheduled cast community.

Commission chairperson Tejinder Kaur said the word ‘Dalit’ does not find mention in the Constitution or any statute. Moreover, the Union Ministry of Social Justice and empowerment, of India has already directed chief secretaries of all the states and Union Territories regarding the same, she said in a statement.

Kaur said the nomenclature “Dalit” doesn’t  find mention in the Constitution of India or any statute and moreover, the Union ministry of social justice and empowerment has already directed all chief secretaries of the state governments and Union Territory administrations regarding the same.

She said that the high court of Madhya Pradesh, Gwalior bench, passed an order on January 15, 2018, “that the Central government/state government and its functionaries would desist from using the world ‘Dalit’ for the members belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes as the same does not find mention in the Constitution of India or any statute”. She went on to say that following the direction of the high court, the ministry of social justice and empowerment of India directed all the state governments/Union Territory administrations to use the word “Scheduled Caste” instead of “Dalit” for the persons belonging to the community.
