LUCKNOW: Mohammad Azam Khan, a senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader and MLA from Rampur, and his MLA son, Abdullah Azam, were sworn in as members of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Monday.  Just before the opening of the Budget Session, Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana administered the oath in his chamber. 

Azam Khan was given a copy of the Constitution and Assembly rules by the Speaker. After serving 27 months in prison on various criminal offences, Azam Khan was just released on bail after winning the 2018 Assembly elections. Abdullah Azam, his son, had won the Suar seat in Rampur.

According to a source close to Azam Khan, the senior leader chose to take the oath "on the advise of his well-wishers."  He left from Rampur early today morning to reach Lucknow.He had earlier decided to stay away on health grounds.

Azam Khan did not react to media questions, but when asked if he had spoken to Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav since his release from prison, he said, "No. Perhaps he (Mulayam) does not have my telephone number."
