Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced that the country, which currently chairs the Non-Aligned Movement, put forward an initiative on setting up the organisation's support office in New York.

Speaking to the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Parliamentary Network in Baku on Thursday, Aliyev stated that the plan has the support of the NAM member states, reports said.

The Baku conference, which aims to examine how to strengthen the role of national parliaments in promoting world peace and sustainable development, is being attended by parliamentary delegations from 40 countries and members of nine international organisations.

The leader of Azerbaijan expressed optimism that the NAM Legislative Network will foster close working relationships with various parliamentary organisations throughout the world in addition to fostering unity among member states.  Aliyev also announced that Baku will host the Non-Aligned Movement's youth summit in July.

The NAM Parliamentary Network's rules of procedure, official logo, and flag were all ratified at the meeting, along with the Baku Declaration. The Chairman and Vice-Chairmen of the network were also elected.

The NAM Parliamentary Network's first meeting was organised by Azerbaijan and took place in Madrid, Spain, in November 2021.
