Ayodhya: Ayodhya, the city of Shri Ram, is the headquarters of a town and district in Ayodhya district of Uttar Pradesh, India. Ayodhya situated on the banks of river Saryu is considered to be a very ancient religious city. It is also believed that the city was inhabited by Manu and called it 'Ayodhya', which means 'Ayudhya' which cannot be won by war. It was also known as 'Kosala Janpad'. According to mythological beliefs, Ayodhya was ruled by Suryavanshi/Raghuvanshi/Arkavanshi kings, in which Lord Ram took an avatar.

The famous Chinese traveller Xuan Tsang came to Ayodhya in the 7th century. According to him, there were 20 Buddhist temples and 3,000 monks lived here. This city is also included in the Sapta Puris. According to the scriptures, Ayodhya, Mathura, Haridwar, Kashi, Kanchipuram, Ujjain and Dwarka, these seven Puris are said to be city Mokshadaya. In the Vedas, Ayodhya is called the city of God and its prosperity is compared to heaven. Atharvaveda mentions Ayodhya as a compound symbol. According to Jainism, five of the 24 Tirthankaras were born here. The first Tirthankara Rishabhnath ji, the second Tirthankar Ajitnath ji, the fourth Tirthankar Abhinandannath ji, the fifth Tirthankara Sumatinath ji and the fourteenth Tirthankara Anantnath ji were born in Ayodhya.

Moreover, according to both Jain and Vedic opinions, Lord Ramachandra ji was also born on this land. All the Tirthankaras and Lord Ramachandraji belonged to the Ikshvaku dynasty. The importance of Ayodhya lies in its ancient history, as it has been the capital of the famous and majestic Kshatriya kings (Suryavanshi) of India. Among the said Kshatriyas, Dasarathi Ramachandra is worshipped as an avatar. Earlier it used to be the capital of Kosala district. According to ancient references, its area was 96 square miles at that time.
