Baba Saheb Ambedkar was married at an early age. Their first marriage was in 1906. He was then 15 years old and had his first wife Ramabai. Ambedkar's studies continued after marriage. He went to England to study. After returning, he joined Jorshore in the upliftment of Dalits. The first wife had five children. Only elder son Yashwantrao lived long. The children could not even read much. Yashwantrao was also educated only till matriculation. However, Yashwant later formed the Republican Party of India. Also became MLA. Baba Saheb used to be very busy in his life. Ramabai died in 1935 after a long illness. Baba Saheb did not even think of marriage for the next 13 years.
Then, in the late 1940s, when he was busy framing the Indian Constitution, health complications began to emerge. He could not sleep at nights. Neuropathic pain started in the legs. Insulin and homeopathic medicines were able to give some relief. He went to Bombay for treatment. Doctors advised that now they also need a partner who is not only proficient in culinary arts but also with medical knowledge so that they can take care of them. During treatment, he met a Brahmin doctor, Sharda Kabir.
Since Dr. Sharda Kabir was treating her in a very dedicated way, he had also come close to her. The proximity grew in such a way that he proposed marriage to Sharda. When she agreed, both of them were married at Ambedkar's residence in Delhi in 1948. After this, many kinds of things and controversies started. All things talked about him. The Brahmins questioned Ambedkar's Dalit politics and ideology. A section of the angry Dalits said that nothing wrong could happen with this. Did Babasaheb get a Brahmin woman for marriage? Some said that this is a conspiracy of Brahmins. Some even ridiculed him. Many of his followers believed that whatever Baba Saheb does, he do it thoughtfully. Baba Saheb is more thoughtful and sensible, so he must have done it right.
