Kolkata: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has suffered a severe setback in West Bengal. Babul Supriyo, a cabinet minister in the Modi government, has taken over the TMC. He resigned from the saffron party a few days ago. He joined the TMC in the presence of TMC MPs Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O'Brien.

Releasing a statement on behalf of the TMC on Babul Supriyo's joining the party said, former Union minister and sitting MP Babul Supriyo has joined the TMC in the presence of TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee and Rajya Sabha member Derek O'Brien. We welcome him to the party on this occasion. Last July, Babul Supriyo, a former Union minister and one of the top BJP leaders in Bengal, retired from politics. He wrote a post on social media saying that he had come to politics only for social service. Now he has decided to change his course.

When he announced his retirement from Sahitya in July, he said that there was no need to stay in politics to serve the people. They can fulfill that objective even by separating from politics. His post had earlier emphasized that he has always been a part of the BJP and will continue to be so. He even said that he would not join TMC or any other political party. But now his post has been edited on his behalf and he has deleted this line. Speculation was rife, and now, after about a month and a half, Supriyo has taken over the TMC.
