Lung cancer among male geriatric population is the most prevalent malignancy, a study conducted in Sawai Man Singh Hospital has revealed. The study was published in Scholars Journal of Applied Medical Sciences (SJAMS). “Lung carcinoma and oral cancer are the most frequent malignancies among the male population as per the current study making them major public health issues from oncology side and suggesting the priority of tobacco control for cancer control.

Tobacco control may reduce many other chronic diseases along with tobacco related cancers,” the study says. The study was conducted under SMS Hospital’s medical oncology department headed by associate professor Dr Sandeep Jasuja.

“It is a first-of-its-kind study conducted on geriatric cancer patients in the state. The startling revelation in the study is that lung cancer is most the common among geriatric population. At least 80% of the geriatric cancer patients with lung cancer developed it because of their lifestyle, which is habit of smoking. Around 20% lung cancers are benign.” Dr Jasuja said that geriatric population is the most neglected lot.

“They need proper screening for cancer and other diseases. If cancer is detected at an early stage, it can be treatable,” Dr Jasuja said. From November 2015 to April 2016, a total of 1,800 patients had attended cancer OPD during the study period.

Out of 1,800, there were 489 patients above 60 years. Among 489 geriatric cancer patients, 151 were suffering from lung cancer, 46 from breast cancer, 46 from ovary cancer, 34 from the cancer of gallbladder and 27 from oral cancer. While rest others were suffering from different other cancers such as lymphoma, colon, prostrate, multiple myeloma, stomach, urinary bladder etc.

Dr Jasuja said that cases of cancer are also increasing with the increase in age and more than 12-23% of all cancers occur among geriatric population.

“Life expectancy has increased so there is a demographic transformation of population from younger population to geriatric population. says that despite the increasing prevalence of cancer in this age group, these patients received less attention in terms of investigation and appropriate treatment.–Agencies
