New Delhi: Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia will be honoured with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award this year. The award is India's highest honour in the field of sports. Media reports quoting sources have been briefed on this time's Khel Ratna Honors. The 25-year-old Poonia will be given the award for his outstanding performance in the wrestling arena.
The Indian Wrestling Federation (WFI) had recommended the name of women racer Vinesh Phogat along with Bajrang Poonia for this prestigious honour. Poonia recently won the gold medal at the Tbilisi Grand Prix. He was able to win the gold medal in the 65 kg weight class by defeating Iran's Peiman Bibyani. In his weight class, the current No.1 player Poonia proved his reign in the Asian continent by winning the Asian Championships held in China.
Poonia also won a gold medal at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games last year. The award was given to Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli and women's weightlifter Mirabai Chanu last year. Last year, Poonia had expressed displeasure after his name was not known for the Khel Ratna and met the then Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore.
