The incident happened when RCB’s AB de Villiers and Marcus Stoinis were at the crease as Ravichandran Ashwin walked up to umpire Shamshuddin to ask for the ball. The play couldn't continue as the other on-field umpire Bruce Oxenford also joined the search party before the fourth umpire sent the box of used balls in order for the teams to not waste more time.  The TV replays then showed that Shamshuddin had taken the ball from Oxenford and put the ball in his right pocket before the strategic break was taken.

The 17-run defeat means that R Ashwin's men have lost 4 of their previous 5 fixtures and are now in need of winning almost all of their remaining matches in the league stage in order to progress to the playoffs. The match saw De Villiers and Stoinis put 121 runs for the 5th wicket in order to take RCB past the 200-run mark. Chasing the total, KXIP couldn't get a lengthy partnership going as KL Rahul and Nicholas Pooran's efforts went in vain as they lost by 10 runs.
