BENGALURU: Despite a turbulent pandemic environment, the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru (BLR Airport) has recorded its highest-ever cargo tonnage.

Moreover, the airport welcomed 16.07 million passengers in Calendar Year 2021 (CY 2021), an increase of 18.9 percent over the 13.51 million passengers in 2020. During this time period, the BLR Airport recovered 48.0% of its pre-Covid traffic level of 33.65 million passengers handled in CY 2019.

Domestic passenger traffic increased by 22.0 percent in CY 2021, rising from 12.39 million in CY 2020 to 15.12 million in CY 2021, owing to the gradual easing of curbs by various state governments.

The BLR Airport processed an all-time high of 406,688 Metric Tonnes (MT) of cargo during the period, representing a significant increase of 28.6 percent over the 316,305 MT processed in 2020.Similarly, international cargo processed 265,873 MT, up 32.8 percent from 200,209 MT in 2020. Domestic cargo increased by 21.3 percent, processing 140,815 MT in comparison to 116,096 MT in 2020. The United States and Europe continue to be the airport's primary trade lanes.
