BANGALORE: The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is set to replace its fleet of Volvo buses with electric buses on the route to Kempegowda International Airport starting next month. This decision comes as BMTC grapples with increasing financial losses from the Volvo bus service.
For years, the Volvo buses have served as a prominent mode of transport to the airport. However, the service has been financially unsustainable for the corporation, with losses surpassing the benefits. In response, BMTC has decided to make a switch to electric buses to reduce both operational costs and environmental impact.
BMTC will introduce 320 new air-conditioned electric buses, provided by Ashok Leyland, to replace the existing fleet. The new buses are expected to contribute to a more sustainable public transportation system, aligning with the city’s efforts to reduce pollution.
The transition to electric buses is part of BMTC's broader goal to enhance Bengaluru’s public transport network, making it more efficient, affordable, and environmentally friendly.
The transition to electric buses will bring multiple benefits to both the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) and the city as a whole. Firstly, it will ease the financial strain on BMTC, which has been struggling with mounting losses from the existing Volvo bus service. Electric buses are expected to have lower operational and maintenance costs, which will help reduce the corporation's overall expenditure in the long run. This shift to cleaner energy will also contribute significantly to reducing Bengaluru’s carbon footprint. By replacing diesel-powered buses with electric alternatives, the city can expect a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality and promoting sustainability. The move is in line with global efforts to combat climate change and supports Bengaluru’s commitment to building a greener, more eco-friendly urban transport system. The transition to electric buses will not only help address financial challenges but will also make Bengaluru a model for other cities aiming to create sustainable and cost-effective public transportation solutions.
