BANGKOK: The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has declared that all of its New Year countdown celebrations will be canceled owing to the probable rapid spread of the Covid-19 Omicron strain. All New Year’s Eve festivities, including Buddhist chanting hosted by the BMA in all 50 districts, would be canceled, according to Bangkok Deputy Governor Kriangyos Sudlabha.

Private events, on the other hand, are still permitted as planned, but each event must employ more stringent anti-Covid-19 procedures, including as screening, cleaning, and social distancing rules, according to Kriangyos.

All guests must show confirmation of vaccination or a negative Covid-19 test result within 72 hours of the event, and organizers must set up emergency quarantine quarters at the venue if any infections are found, he added.

More than 100 cases of the Omicron variant had been recorded in the country as of December 22, with several others awaiting confirmation. Since December 22, Thailand has temporarily halted the registration of foreign tourists for quarantine exemptions in order to prevent the spread of the new highly dangerous strain.
